We\u2019ve all been there. You\u2019re in a stuffy classroom. You have a large text heavy workbook in front of you and your instructor puts the three sentences of death up on the board.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the end of this learning\u00a0experience,\u00a0you will have:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-list-dark\">\n<li> \t<p>Understood the organisation\u2019s absence management policy\u00a0<\/p> \t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-list-dark\">\n<li> \t<p>Know how to utilise the absence management policy\u00a0<\/p> \t<\/li>\n\n<li> \t<p>Understand the consequences of not using the absence management policy properly\u00a0<\/p> \t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the end of this our learners may be, as\u00a0our\u00a0Chief\u00a0Learning\u00a0Officer\u00a0James\u00a0McLuckie\u00a0put\u00a0so eloquently in his recent webinar:\u00a0\u201clonging for death\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/mapal-os.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/08\/learning_experience.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2377\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Never fear though. Below we have a summary of techniques you can use to create more engaging and effective learning content, as well as bringing some of your classroom learning online.\u00a0If you\u2019d like to talk to one of our team about putting any of this into\u00a0action,\u00a0please email us \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:lespouy@mapal-os.com\">lespouy@mapal-os.com<\/a>\u00a0or request a demo <a href=\"https:\/\/mapal-os.com\/en\/request-a-demo\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-4\">Action Mapping\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Action mapping is a 4-step process\u00a0to help you design effective learning experiences\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> \t<p><strong>Define the outcome.\u00a0<\/strong>You start off\u00a0by defining the outcome\u00a0you want to achieve.\u00a0 Try to make this as measurable as possible. To take the\u00a0course\u00a0example above about absence management,\u00a0your goal might be to reduce absence across the organisation by 30%.<\/p> \t<\/li>\n\n<li> \t<p><strong>What must the learner\u00a0do?<\/strong>\u00a0Next you want to think about\u00a0what the learner needs to be able to do. Articulate the impact of absences on the\u00a0organisation and\u00a0think about what decisions they may have to make with regards to this.\u00a0For example \u2013 hold a\u00a0difficult\u00a0conversation with one of their direct reports\u00a0about their repeated absences.<\/p> \t<\/li>\n\n<li> \t<p><strong>Practice activities. <\/strong>Whether online or face to face, design activities or games that will enable the learner to practice what they are supposed to do\u00a0in real life. Most importantly focus on\u00a0decision-making.\u00a0They should be practicing decisions they would be making\u00a0in the workplace. For\u00a0example,\u00a0get them to\u00a0decide what course of action they would take following\u00a0multiple scenarios\u00a0of team absence.<\/p> \t<\/li>\n\n<li> \t<p><strong>Minimum info.\u00a0<\/strong>Where possible stop your course from becoming an information dump. What is the minimum amount of information you need to include in your online course to enable your learner to practice their decision making?\u00a0<\/p> \t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-4\">Practice activities\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s take a closer look at Step 3 \u2013 Practice Activities.\u00a0Practice activities can take various forms online. Start by thinking about this\u00a03-step\u00a0process: Absorb, Do, Connect.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"931\" height=\"610\" src=\"https:\/\/mapal-os.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/08\/absorb-do-connect.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2378\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-4\">The Seven deadly sins of learning design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> \t<p><strong>Sloth<\/strong> \u2013 Not focusing on performance, when you create with lazy\/woolly learning outcomes.Try to focus on what will impact the business.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p> \t<\/li>\n\n<li> \t<p><strong>Greed<\/strong> \u2013 Being trampled by subject matter\u00a0experts and\u00a0putting\u00a0too much content into one course. You don\u2019t want to stuff a module with too much\u00a0content,\u00a0or you will lose the valuable information\u00a0you really need them to understand.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p> \t<\/li>\n\n<li> \t<p><strong>Pride <\/strong>\u2013 Not telling the real story. You\u00a0must\u00a0adopt a\u00a0journalist\u2019s\u00a0mindset. Ask questions to make sure you\u2019re solving the real problem.<\/p> \t<\/li>\n\n<li> \t<p><strong>Gluttony<\/strong> \u2013 Thinking you can take on the world (with an e-learning course) a\u00a0digital learning resource can only do so much.\u00a0How\u00a0can\u00a0you support it with blended\u00a0learning?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p> \t<\/li>\n\n<li> \t<p><strong>Envy<\/strong> \u2013 Losing sight of what makes a great learning designer. You must have a\u00a0problem-solving\u00a0mentality, the hide of a Rhino,\u00a0be endlessly curious and\u00a0have\u00a0the courage to fail.\u00a0 Most of all, have fun!\u00a0<\/p> \t<\/li>\n\n<li> \t<p><strong>Wrath<\/strong> \u2013 Designing poor assessments \u2013 Think formative not just summative assessment \u2013 don\u2019t just spoon feed assessment for people (don\u2019t sign post this is where assessment is but have real world examples), don\u2019t put tests for the sake of it.<\/p> \t<\/li>\n\n<li> \t<p><strong>Lust<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0Are you the type to be seduced by shiny objects?\u00a0Don\u2019t be swayed by\u00a0fads or\u00a0use\u00a0the latest technologies\u00a0just because you can. This can put the learner off\u00a0or distract from learning outcomes.\u00a0Remember, sometimes all that is needed is a wee checklist.<\/p> \t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-4\">Top ten tips for online conversion\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> \t<p>Don\u2019t just convert a PowerPoint\u00a0<\/p> \t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> \t<p>Think about resources, not just courses \u2013 do you need a whole\u00a0course,\u00a0or would a\u00a0shore\u00a0video do? What about an infographic or even\u00a0the\u00a0humble checklist?\u00a0<\/p> \t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> \t<p>Avoid the curse of \u2018Click Next\u2019 \u2013 create some interactivity within each slide to avoid learners just trying to click through to the end\u00a0\u00a0<\/p> \t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> \t<p>You don\u2019t need to spend a fortune. Find a learning partner that will enable you to upload your own content, communicate with staff and have an online library that\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0break the bank\u00a0<\/p> \t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> \t<p>Use scenarios \u2013\u00a0Link back to examples relevant to their jobs and get them to practice their decision making on real life scenarios\u00a0<\/p> \t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> \t<p>Introduce interactive thinking elements \u2013\u00a0Don\u2019t make the learning experience too passive, get them to try things out, come up with their own ideas and so on\u00a0<\/p> \t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> \t<p>Allow learners to explore the content freely. Don\u2019t lockdown learning \u2013 allow learners to explore\u00a0all\u00a0your content and dip\u00a0into\u00a0each bit whenever they want\u00a0<\/p> \t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> \t<p>Bite-sized \u2013 keep sections short and don\u2019t be tempted to put all the information you have into one course. Break up each task or learning outcome into\u00a0bite sized\u00a0chunks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p> \t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> \t<p>Mobile \u2013\u00a0most of\u00a0today\u2019s\u00a0learners will be on a mobile.
